Though a righteous kill may deem itself necessary in the continued proliferation of hope in the city, a murder always leaves remnants of vitriol and a quest for vengeance. I’m reminded of the words “success took a shot you” from the motion picture “American Gangster” when listening to “Renown” featuring Richmond legend Skillz. Herein we find Skillz providing Noah with words of wisdom that encourage him to stay sharp amid shots taken at his newly found throne. Skillz adds insight to the love/hate relationship the city has maintained with him and his success. Noah harnesses Skillz’ advice and fuels his final words of the record over a slowed sample: “We ain’t have a lot of help it made us self-sufficient/I started making plans and stopped making wishes.”
